shark attack in Egypt

Diving all the way up the Sudan coast we ran out of Sudan and ended up in Egypt.

After a period of heavy weather the winds calmed just as we reached the Brothers - two tiny isolated islands with surrounding reef which lie in very deep water.

One of us stayed on the boat and Jean-Michel and I doned out gear and jumped off the boat, quickly submerged and regrouped on the reef "wall" at 20 meters.  We had a great dive made all the more interesting by the presence of larger-than-usual grey reef sharks which, however, were less curious or less bold than others we encountered further south.   They tailed us the entire dive but never got too close - unlike the ones in Sha'ab Rumi (Sudan) which repeatedly came within a meter or two for a close inspection.

However, the excitement here was not going to be below the water but on the surface..  We had a longish swim back to the boat and JM got out of the water leaving me his heavy tank to pass up to him.  It is then that I saw - still 20 meters below me - two very large and unusual looking sharks making my way at some speed.  I called to JM to hurry up as there were sharks but my video gear fell and I had some trouble recovering it.  When next I looked up, one of the sharks was coming up at me at about 45 degrees and didn't look like it was just curious... It loomed closer - massive .  At first I looked for a reassuring white or black tip common to harmless reef sharks but this monster was nothing I had seen before. At this point, adrenaline took over and I was able to force myself onto the swim platform whilst still wearing my heavy weights and tank.  I had never been able to do that before!  The shark ended up where I had been less than a second earlier - about 4 inches under the swim platform (which is see-through).  I was stuck crouching on the platform in a strange position as the weights and tank had me pinned.
